Fabric prints for photography backdrops
A backdrop is seen by the camera first and the room second. Size it from the frame you plan to shoot, then think about light, creases and focus.

Work out the size from the lens.
Photographers often underestimate this. The backdrop must fill the frame at your usual distance, with room for the subject to move. Backdrops are also rarely shot right up against the subject. Moving someone away from the cloth reduces shadows and softens the background, but the further away they stand, the more the lens takes in.
| Shoot | Rough width | Rough height |
|---|---|---|
| Head and shoulders | About 1.5m | About 1.5m to 2m |
| Seated portrait | About 2m | About 2m |
| Full length, one person | About 2.5m | About 2.7m, with some on the floor |
| Small group | 3m or more | About 2.7m, with some on the floor |
These are starting points only. Check them against your own lens, room and working distance. Our largest listed size, 60in x 40in, is about 1524mm x 1016mm. That covers close portraits and product work. Anything bigger needs a quote.
Why fabric suits the camera
A shiny backdrop throws flash back into the lens. Fabric has a soft, low-sheen surface, so it holds up better under strobes and continuous lights. It also folds into a bag for location work, which a rigid panel or a heavy roll does not. If you are torn between the two, read fabric or PVC backdrop.
Getting a good image on the cloth
- Keep it simple. A background that is slightly out of focus hides detail, so soft textures and gradients work better than fine patterns.
- Mind the subject. Bright colours can reflect on to skin, so test with a person in place.
- Watch for moiré. Fine weaves and tight patterns can create rippling lines on a digital sensor. Shoot a test at your usual distance and aperture.
- Check resolution. A soft background is forgiving, but heavily enlarged images can still show blocky edges. Our guide to viewing distance and print quality can help.
Creases
Folded fabric will show soft lines. Hang it early, and pull it taut with a bar or clamps. Ask us before applying heat. If you shoot only in one studio, rolling it on a tube avoids the problem.

Your questions.
Can the backdrop reach the floor?
Yes, if it is long enough. Allow extra length so that the cloth can sweep forward, and remember that people may walk on it. Tell us the length you need.
Can I use a stock image for my backdrop?
Check your licence. Many stock licences have limits on how images can be printed, or how the results can be used commercially.
Can a fabric backdrop have hanging fittings?
Yes. Hanging bars, Velcro and eyelets are available on request, so tell us what your stands use.
