40in x 30in prints

At 1016mm by 762mm, this size is a metre wide and as tall as a typical door is wide. It can hold a room without taking it over.

Retail interior with large printed graphics on curved walls and columns

A metre across, a door's width deep.

Forty inches is 1016mm, and thirty inches is 762mm, which happens to match the width of a common British internal door. Above a console table or a three-seat sofa, a 40in x 30in print reads as the main feature on that wall. On a shop's back wall, it is big enough to be seen from the entrance.

One person can carry a rolled print with no effort. Mounted, it is a job for two hands and a clear path, and a tight stairwell can be a challenge.

Why not A0?

A0 is 1189mm x 841mm, so it is bigger in both directions, and its shape is slimmer, at about 1.41 to 1. This size is 4 to 3, or 1.33 to 1. That small difference matters: 4:3 is the native shape of many phones and compact cameras, so images from those need no crop. A 3:2 file from a DSLR, on the other hand, will lose about a ninth of its width.

Pixels to aim for

For something seen from a step or two back, around 150 pixels per inch is a useful target. Multiply each side by 150 and you need 6,000 x 4,500 pixels. A 12 megapixel phone at 4,032 x 3,024 gives you about 100 pixels per inch here. That can be fine for a bold image seen from across a room, but it will look soft up close. Do the sum on your own file, and send it to us if you are in doubt.

Finding a frame

Frames at this size are not often sold off the shelf, so plan for a made-to-measure frame. Framing is available on request. Glass at a metre wide is heavy, which is why many people prefer acrylic glazing or a mounted print instead. See framing large prints before you decide. If you do not need a frame, a mounted board hangs neatly on its own.

Sizing check

Hold a metre rule against the wall, or cut a piece of wallpaper lining to 1016mm x 762mm and tape it up. Leave it for a day. If it feels too big by the evening, go down to 30in x 20in.

Useful to know

Your questions.

What is 40 x 30 inches in centimetres?

It is 101.6cm by 76.2cm. Our price list rounds metric sizes, so give exact measurements if it has to fit something.

Is this the same as a quad poster?

A UK quad film poster is traditionally 40in x 30in, printed landscape, so yes. That can be useful if you are reprinting or framing one.

Can a print this size be sent by post?

A rolled print can travel in a tube by courier. A mounted board has to go flat. Ask us about delivery before you order.
