Sports club banners

For most grassroots teams, sports club banners are about two things: looking after sponsors and finding new players. This page is for volunteers and committee members at football, rugby, cricket and hockey clubs, whatever the size of the ground.

Selling pitchside space to local sponsors

Pitchside boards can be a useful source of club income, so treat them as a product. Decide on one size per slot, set a season length and agree who pays for printing. Sponsors then know exactly what they are buying. Make each sponsor banner separate, with its own eyelets, so a renewing business stays up while a departing one can be swapped out. Our banner printing page explains the finishing options. Check with your league or ground owner about any rules on perimeter advertising.

Rails, nets and windy pitches

Open playing fields catch every gust. Banners on perimeter rails need tying at every eyelet, and mesh banners are often better for exposed grounds or tall fences. Fix them so nothing sticks out towards the playing area, and check that ties and boards are not creating a hazard for players running off the pitch. Your league or governing body may specify clearances, so ask them. If you share the ground, confirm whether banners must come down after each match, as this affects your fixing method.

Recruitment drives and presentation night

A banner at the school gate or clubhouse entrance saying "New players welcome" with the age groups and a website can work hard during pre-season. Leave the year off so that you can use it every August. If you use photos of juniors, get parental consent and follow your club's safeguarding policy. For end of season awards, a printed backdrop with the club crest and main sponsors gives everybody a smart place for trophy photos, and it comes out again the following year.

Your questions.

What size should a pitchside sponsor banner be?

Size depends on your rails and how many sponsors you want along them. Pick one standard size so slots stay simple to sell, measure the rail, and check any ground or league rules first.

How do we replace a sponsor mid-season without reprinting every banner?

Print each sponsor on a separate banner, not one long strip. Then only the changing sponsor needs reprinting, and keeping the same size and eyelet positions lets the new one use the same fixings.
