Race and finish line banners

Every finisher's photograph has your banner in it, so it deserves more thought than a last-minute order. Race and finish line banners for running clubs, charity events and timing companies need to suit the gantry, the weather and the camera.

Start with the gantry, not the artwork

Inflatable arches, scaffold towers and truss gantries all take banners differently. Get the clear span and fixing points from whoever supplies the structure, because a banner drawn to a nominal width may not fit between the uprights. Decide whether it hangs from pole pockets, ties through eyelets or clips to a bar. Participants will pass under it, so the height and secure fixing matter. Have your event safety lead check the setup, along with the road closure plan where relevant.

Designed for the finish photo

Finish line photographers usually shoot from in front, often low down, with the runner's head in the lower part of the frame. Put the event name and title sponsor high up so bodies do not block them. Keep key words away from the very edges, because tight crops cut them. Add a strong, simple word such as finish that reads from far up the road. Any printed floor graphic for the line needs checking for grip, and for permission from whoever controls the surface.

Lining the last hundred metres

The finish straight is where sponsors get the most attention. Barrier banners can carry repeating logos along both sides, but check your barrier model first, as sizes vary. Mesh banners are worth considering for exposed sites, where wind can catch long runs of solid PVC. Keep distance markers and feed station signs in the same style, and save dates for a separate piece, so that your main race and finish line banners and the wider banner set can return next year.

Your questions.

Should a finish line banner be mesh or solid PVC?

Solid PVC gives a crisp look in photographs, while mesh suits exposed places where wind is a concern. The right choice comes down to your structure and site, so describe what it will hang from.

Can one banner work for both the start and the finish?

Yes, some races use a double-sided design or a swappable word panel. If it is printed on both faces, a blockout material stops one side showing through the other. Explain how your course runs when you enquire.
