A pub sign has to do a surprising range of things, from carrying a name with decades of local history to announcing Thursday quiz night. This page is for licensees, pub groups and bar operators sorting out pub and bar signage indoors and out.

Pub exteriors often come with more rules than a new owner expects. Many pubs are in conservation areas or listed, and exterior changes, new illumination and hanging signs may need consent. Check with your local planning authority first. If you are a tenant, your pub company or brewery may also have to approve the design, and may even have brand rules. Get those answers before artwork starts. Once permission is clear, we can talk through signage materials for the fascia and other panels.
Traditional hand-painted lettering is hard to beat, but print can sit comfortably alongside it. Direct printed aluminium signs stay flat and suit menu boards, car park notices and beer garden directions. A printed sign can also reproduce a historic pub sign image if the original is fading, as long as you hold the rights to it. Choose matt finishes near floodlights or wall lamps, because reflections make a shiny board hard to read at night.
Some signs need to change more often. Outdoor banners suit big sporting tournaments, Christmas bookings and summer beer festivals, and they can return each year if you leave the dates off. Inside, posters in frames by the bar and in toilet corridors reach a captive audience for weekly events. Keep alcohol promotions responsible and check licensing conditions and the advertising codes if you are unsure. A-boards on the pavement may need council approval, so ask before placing one.
You may. It depends on the size, illumination, location and the building's status, and listed buildings bring extra considerations. Check with your local planning authority, and your pub company if you are a tenant.
Rigid aluminium-based signs are usually chosen for long-term outdoor use, because they stay flat and cope with weather. Lifespan varies with exposure, so tell us where the sign will sit and we can recommend a finish.
