Graduation backdrops

Families keep graduation pictures for decades, so the background behind them is worth planning properly. These notes are for schools, colleges and university events teams ordering graduation backdrops for ceremonies, photo stations or celebration days.

Test the design against gowns

Dark gowns can disappear into a dark navy background, and navy is a common choice for institutions. A lighter or mid-tone area around the head and shoulders separates graduates from the design, which helps both the official photographer and parents with phones. Bright hood linings may also clash with strong brand colours. Ask your photographer what they prefer before artwork is finished, since they may have a view on the lighting and on how close the subject should stand.

Crests, class years and brand rules

Institutions usually have strict guidance on crests and logos, including clear space and approved colours. Get the master artwork from your communications team rather than a website image, which will soften at this scale. If the year appears on the design, the piece serves one ceremony only. Leave it off and you can bring the printed backdrop out again. A repeated logo pattern is one option, although a single large crest set to one side can feel more formal in portraits.

Queues, corridors and group shots

Photo stations can block a busy hall. Put graduation backdrops where a queue can form without stopping people entering the ceremony, and allow room for the photographer to step back. Individual portraits need less width than a whole department, so work out which matters more. Portable options include banner stands for small stations and pop-up displays for a wider, self-supporting wall, which can be easier than hanging anything in a listed hall or a hired venue.

Useful to know

Your questions.

Should a graduation backdrop be matt?

Usually, yes. Matt materials reduce flash glare and reflections, so graduates and crests stay clear in pictures. Ask your photographer about their lighting, and mention whether it will stand under stage lights or in daylight.

Can we use the same design each graduation season?

You can, provided it avoids the year and the materials are stored carefully. Fabric can fold or roll, while rigid panels need protected storage. Add the year on a separate sign if you want it in shot.
