Dibond or Foamex

Both boards give a print a flat, rigid backing. Foamex is the light, economical choice. Dibond costs more and earns it where a sign has to stay flat for years.

The short answer.

Choose Foamex for indoor displays, events and signs with a shorter life. Choose Dibond for permanent signs, outdoor fixings and large panels that must not bow.

What each board is

Foamex is a rigid foam PVC sheet. It is light, easy to cut and has a smooth surface. Dibond is an aluminium composite: two thin aluminium skins bonded to a core, which gives a lot of stiffness for its weight.

Ask three questions

How long does it need to last? A one-week event does not need aluminium. A shopfront sign probably does.

How is it fixed? Lightweight Foamex is easy to hang with tape or Velcro. Screw fixings and outdoor brackets favour a stiffer board.

How big is it? The larger the panel, the more thickness and stiffness matter. If you stay with Foamex for a big piece, look at 5mm or 10mm instead of 3mm.

Useful to know

Your questions.

Is 10mm Foamex as stiff as 3mm Dibond?

They behave differently, so it depends on the size and fixing. Thick Foamex resists bowing better than thin Foamex, but it is still a foam sheet. Tell us the job and we will suggest a board.

Can Foamex go outdoors?

Yes, it works indoors and out, but it suits shorter-term outdoor use better than a permanent sign in full sun.

Are other boards available?

Yes. Polyboard, MDF, Corex and 060 and 080 boards are on our price list too.
