Aluminium & composite signs

Aluminium composite panels

Aluminium composite panels are made from two thin aluminium skins bonded to a lightweight core, giving a board that stays flat without the weight of solid metal. They are a common choice for fascia signs, site boards and long-term wall panels.

Why a sandwich beats solid sheet

Solid aluminium of the same weight would be thin and easy to dent or flex. Separating two skins with a core gives stiffness, so large boards hold a straight line. The surface does not rust, and it accepts both direct print and laminated vinyl. Panels of about 3mm are widely used for signs, with thicker sheets available for bigger spans. Dibond is a well-known brand, though the name is often used loosely. If you are weighing up other rigid materials, start with our aluminium signs page.

Fixings change the look of the finished sign

Decide how the board will attach before finalising the artwork. Visible screws and rivets are simple but need clear space in the design. Stand-off fixings lift the panel from the wall for a more considered look, and need drilled holes in agreed positions. Rail systems and adhesive tape keep the face clean, although tape depends heavily on the surface behind. Panels can also be routed and folded into trays for fascias, which hides the raw edge. Ask us what your design requires, and whether fitting can be arranged.

Core type and building use

Not all composite board is the same. The core is commonly polyethylene, and fire-retardant versions also exist. For a small freestanding sign this may not matter, but for anything fixed to a building, the required fire performance is something to check with your building owner or adviser before you specify. Very large or high-level signs may also need permissions or structural advice. On a signage project, get those answers first, as they may rule out a material however good it looks.

Your questions.

Can aluminium composite panels be cut to shape?

Yes, the material can be routed into custom outlines, and tighter details are possible within reason. Supply a vector cut path with your artwork and we'll tell you if any part of it is too fine.

Is direct print or applied vinyl better on composite board?

Each suits different jobs. Applied vinyl with a laminate adds a protective layer, while direct print leaves a simple one-piece surface. Your expected exposure and lifespan are the deciding factors, so ask us.
