Polyboard mounting

Polyboard mounting turns a flexible print into a light, rigid panel by bonding it to a board with a foam centre. It is aimed at people preparing presentation boards, retail displays, exhibition panels and event signs for indoor use.

Where a foam-centred board earns its place

The main appeal is weight. A large panel can be carried under one arm, hung from thin cord or fixed with hook-and-loop pads, which suits temporary walls that cannot take screws. It also cuts cleanly and looks smart for presentations, model-making and pitch boards. The trade-off is durability, because the surface dents if knocked and corners crush in transit. For a longer run, or anything handled constantly, Foamex printing gives a tougher board at the cost of extra weight.

Stopping large panels from bowing

Any board with a print on one side only can curve slightly, as the two faces respond differently to humidity and temperature. Big sheets are most affected. Thicker board helps, as does a balancing layer on the back, and storing panels flat rather than propped against a wall makes a real difference. Keep the boards away from damp, radiators and direct sun. If flatness is critical, tell us the dimensions, and we can advise on whether this is the right base under our mounting and laminating options.

Laminate, edges and the journey to the venue

A matt or gloss laminate applied before mounting guards against fingerprints and light scuffs, and matt reduces glare under exhibition lighting. Edges are the weak spot, as the foam core shows when viewed from the side. For a tidier finish, keep panels in a frame or use a dark background so the edge is less obvious. Wrap each one with protection between faces and carry it upright. Outdoors is not suitable, since paper-faced board absorbs moisture and soon warps.

Your questions.

Can Polyboard mounting be used outside?

It is not a good idea. The foam-centred board is intended for indoor work and will warp or delaminate when damp. For outdoor use, ask about plastic or aluminium boards instead.

Can you mount a print I already have?

Often, yes, though it depends on the print's surface, thickness and condition. Tell us what it is and its size. Irreplaceable originals carry extra risk, so discuss those with us before bringing them in.
