Clear window vinyl

With clear vinyl, the print seems to sit directly on the glass with no sticker around it. That is its charm, and also the reason it needs careful design.

Gold vinyl lettering on a restaurant window

Will anyone be able to read it?

That is the first thing to ask, because a clear film has no background of its own. Your design sits against whatever lies beyond the glass: a dark shop interior, a bright display, a busy street reflected on the pane. Colours are see-through unless something has been done to block them, so a pale tint on a dark interior can be close to invisible from outside.

When words or a logo have to read clearly, you have two choices. Either use strong colours against a light background, or ask us how a white layer could sit behind the ink. If solid lettering is all you need, cut vinyl lettering may be a simpler route, as there is no film between the letters at all.

Inside is the usual answer for shops. Tell us which side you have chosen before you send artwork, because the file must be flipped for inside fitting.

Things to check on the glass

  • Coatings. Some modern glazing has a coating that can change how a film bonds. Ask your glazier.
  • Heat. Dark films on sealed double glazing can absorb sun and raise the temperature of the pane. On a large area, get advice from the glass supplier before you commit.
  • Cleanliness. Every speck under a clear film shows, so the glass has to be spotless.

Keeping it looking clean

Bubbles and dust are far more visible on clear film than on white vinyl, so large pieces benefit from experienced hands. Read installing window vinyl before you decide to fit it yourself. Fitting can be agreed in your quote.

Clear window film is not a line on our standard price list, so ask us for a price with your sizes. If your project uses a clear print that is held in place rather than stuck down, optically clear polyester has listed prices.

Useful to know

Your questions.

Is clear vinyl easy to remove?

It depends on the adhesive and how long it has been on the glass. Gentle heat and a plastic scraper often help. Tell us if you expect to change it regularly.

Will sunlight fade it?

Any printed film in a sunny window will fade over time, and how fast depends on the film and the direction the glass faces. Plan on refreshing it.

Can clear vinyl go on acrylic or a mirror?

Often it can, but the surface matters, so test it first. Tell us what the material is and we will advise.
