Banner hems and eyelets

Finishing is the part of a banner order that people skip, then regret when they reach the fence with a cable tie. This guide to banner hems and eyelets is for anyone ordering a banner who wants it to hang flat and stay in one piece.

What a hem actually does

A hem folds the banner edge over and secures it, usually by welding or stitching, to create a double thickness. That reinforced edge resists tearing and gives eyelets something strong to bite into. Without it, you have a flat cut sheet, which can be fine for a short indoor display or a print fixed into a frame, but it is more likely to rip under strain. Indoor fabric banners are often finished differently, so ask what is suitable for your material.

Eyelet spacing and where to put them

Eyelets are metal rings punched through the hem, giving you somewhere to feed a cable tie, rope or bungee. Closer spacing shares the load better and reduces flapping, so exposed or large banners usually need more of them. Think about your actual fixing points too, because eyelets that match the uprights of a fence save a lot of fiddling. Specify the spacing, or describe the site and we can work it out with you.

Protecting your artwork from the finishing

Banner hems and eyelets eat into the outer edge of the design. Keep logos, phone numbers and important text well inside the edge, and check the artwork guide for how to set up margins. Sometimes a pole pocket is the better finish: a sleeve along the top or bottom that takes a pole, giving a clean line with no visible ties. It suits stage hangings and printed banners on a bar or track. Give us the pole diameter so the pocket fits.

Your questions.

How far apart should banner eyelets be?

There is no single rule, as it varies with banner size, material and exposure. Many outdoor banners have them every 50cm or so, with closer spacing where wind is strong. Check with us for your site.

Can eyelets be added to a banner later?

Sometimes, using a hand tool and reinforcing patches, but a banner without a hem may tear at the fixing points. It is better to decide the finish when ordering, so the edge is strengthened where needed.
