Charity event banners

Every pound spent on a banner is a pound not going to the cause, so charity event banners should earn their keep over more than one outing. This page is for fundraisers, event volunteers and small charity teams running sponsored walks, galas and awareness days.

Separate what changes from what doesn't

The most useful thing you can do is split your message. Put the charity name, logo, web address and a call to action on a main banner with no year, then show the date, venue and this year's theme on a smaller add-on or a separate sign. A sponsored walk can then reuse the finish line for years. Our banner printing page covers finishing options. Check too whether your regulator or governing documents require your charity number on printed material.

Keeping corporate sponsors happy

Sponsor logos cause more delays than any other part of a fundraising job. Ask each company for a vector logo and its brand guidelines as soon as the deal is agreed, and get written approval of the layout. Logo order and size can be sensitive, so agree them beforehand rather than deciding at the proof stage. If sponsors change every year, a dedicated sponsor board is easier to reprint than your main banner. Indoors, a roller banner gives a sponsor presence at the gala dinner.

Rigging in a park or on a start line

Outdoor events are rarely set up with ideal fixings. Before ordering, ask the event organiser or landowner what you can tie to, and walk the site if possible. Long banners across a course need secure anchors and enough height for runners and vehicles, and your event risk assessment should cover them. In exposed locations, mesh banners reduce wind load. Make one volunteer responsible for taking it down, drying it and storing it.

Your questions.

How do we stop a charity event banner going out of date?

Leave off the year and date, and use a smaller add-on panel for event details. Keeping the main design generic lets it return for later events, which spreads the cost over several fundraisers.

Should a fun run start line banner be mesh or PVC?

Mesh copes better with wind on exposed sites, while solid PVC gives stronger image impact in sheltered spots. Tell us how it will be hung and the site conditions, and we can help you choose.
