A2 canvas prints

A2 is the canvas size that likes company. At 420 x 594mm (16.5 x 23.4in) it looks modest alone on a big wall and very settled in a pair or a row of three.

Think in groups.

Hung alone, an A2 canvas belongs on a narrow stretch of wall: an alcove beside a chimney breast, the space above a bedside table, a landing. Hung together, several can do the job of a much larger piece, and they are easier to carry, post and rearrange. That makes A2 a favourite for meeting rooms, restaurants with long banquette walls and artists showing a series.

Sum the width before you commit

Add the canvas widths, then add the gaps. As a rough guide, gaps of 50mm to 80mm keep a group reading as one piece.

Group widths with 60mm gaps

Two portrait420 + 60 + 420900mm
Three portrait420 + 60 + 420 + 60 + 4201380mm
Two landscape594 + 60 + 5941248mm
Three landscape594 + 60 + 594 + 60 + 5941902mm

So three portrait canvases, at 1380mm across, sit nicely over a two-metre sofa, where one on its own would be lost. A long dining bench might take three landscape.

Stretched or rolled?

This choice often comes up at A2, because it is a size artists like to post to buyers. A stretched canvas arrives ready to hang. A rolled canvas print goes in a tube and is stretched or framed at the other end, which can suit overseas sales.

Sets from different images

A row only works if the pictures belong together. Three photographs with similar tones and a similar horizon height will look planned; three unrelated favourites will look like a noticeboard. Try them side by side as thumbnails on screen before you order. Different pictures at one size can still count towards a volume price when you order them together, so ask about a set.

Is the file large enough?

Longest side in pixels divided by 23.4 gives your pixels per inch. Around 3,500 pixels gets you to 150, which suits canvas nicely, and most modern phones and cameras clear that with room to spare. Old web images are the usual problem. If the picture came from a website or messaging app, find the original instead. See viewing distance and print quality for how close is too close.

Useful to know

Your questions.

How high should a row of A2 canvases hang?

A common guide is to put the centre of the row at about eye level, roughly 1450mm to 1500mm from the floor. Over furniture, leave a clear gap above it instead.

Can one image be split across several A2 canvases?

Yes, as long as the file is large enough for the whole width. Remember that the gaps take a slice out of the picture visually, so keep faces and text away from the breaks.

Can I send a stretched A2 canvas by post?

Stretched canvases are bulky for their weight and need corner protection. Ask us about packing and delivery when you order.
