240mic roll-up banner media

A roller banner spends its life being pulled out and wound back in. 240mic media is made for that routine, which is more than can be said for most print.

What 240mic means.

Mic is short for micron, a thousandth of a millimetre. So 240mic is 0.24mm, roughly the thickness of two or three sheets of office paper, but in a plastic film. Unlike paper, it is measured by thickness and not weight, because in a roller it is stiffness that counts.

What a roller stand asks of a graphic

Think through what happens each time you use one. The sheet is pulled up from a sprung cassette, held by a top bar, and left under gentle tension. Later it is wound tightly back around a small core, possibly for months. The film must lie flat, resist curling at the sides, stay opaque in front of a bright window, and not crack or crease in the mechanism.

A note on light

Stand a thin graphic in front of a window and the sun will show through it, along with the shadow of the pole. Roll-up films usually include a layer that blocks this, but they do vary, so mention it if your stand will have a bright window behind it. A double-sided stand uses two separate graphics.

Replacing a graphic on an old stand

You do not always need new hardware. Measure the visible width and height, then check how the existing sheet is attached at the top and at the base, because stands vary. Note the height as well, as not every stand extends to the same length. Our page on replacement roller banner graphics goes into this.

Useful to know

Your questions.

Is 240mic media suitable outdoors?

Roller stands are really indoor products, as wind will topple them easily. For outside use look at a PVC banner with fixings instead.

Why does the bottom of my old banner look scruffy?

The lowest part of the film stays inside or near the cassette, and it gets the most wear. Keep important content higher up, and take care when you wind it back.

Can 240mic media be laminated?

Ask us. Protection can help a banner that gets heavy use, but the film still has to wind smoothly into the stand.
