060 mounting board

Frames have a fixed depth, and everything inside has to fit. When a mounted print is going behind glass, a slim board can be what makes the stack work.

Wood-effect printed wall panels in a lit interior

Do the frame sum first.

A frame's rebate is the recess behind the front lip that holds everything in. Measure its depth, then add up what has to go inside. Here is a typical example, using rough figures. We are reading 060 as 0.060in, about 1.5mm (0.060 x 25.4 = 1.52mm), which is the usual way to read trade numbers like this. Ask us to confirm the board for your order.

A sample frame stack
LayerRough thickness
Glass2mm
Card window mount1.4mm
Photo paper print0.2mm
060 board1.5mm
Total5.1mm

With 080 at about 2mm in place of 060, the stack comes to 5.6mm. With 3mm Foamex it comes to 6.6mm. If your frame has a 6mm rebate, the foam board will not fit, while either slim board will. Also leave a little space for a backing sheet and the pins or tabs that hold it all in.

060 or 080?

On price, there is very little in it.

Mounting prices, per board
Size060 Board080 Board
A2£8£7
A1£16£15
A0£32£32
30in x 20in£12£12
40in x 30in£24£24
60in x 40in£49£49

Guide prices from our price list. They exclude VAT and delivery and assume print-ready artwork.

The two prices are identical at A0 and at all three inch sizes, and 060 is slightly higher at A2 and A1. So let depth and feel decide. If the frame is tight, take the slimmer board. If you have room, look at 080 board, which gives a little more body for large prints.

What to measure

  • The rebate depth, at a point where nothing is in the frame
  • The inside width and height of the frame, not the outside
  • The thickness of any glazing you plan to reuse
  • The gap needed for the back fixings
  • Whether any old backing is staying in or coming out

Before you commit

Mounting bonds a print to a board, and it is usually not reversible. That is fine for a replaceable print, but think twice with something irreplaceable. If you are working with an original or a limited edition, speak to a framer about conservation methods first. See framing large prints for other approaches and framed print options if you would like us to look after the framing as well, which is available on request.

Useful to know

Your questions.

What if my frame depth is very shallow?

Then you may need to drop the window mount or use a thinner glazing. A framer can also add a spacer or deepen the back. Tell us the depth and we can talk it through.

Will a print on 060 board stay flat?

Inside a frame it should, as the frame gives it support. At large sizes a slim board on its own has less stiffness, so plan to frame it.

Can you mount my existing print on 060 board?

Possibly. It depends on the print. Our guide to mounting a poster you already own explains what we need to know.
