Pavement sign graphics

An A-board outside a café, salon or shop has seconds to turn a passer-by into a customer. Pavement sign graphics are for businesses that have a frame or are buying one, and want printed panels that look sharp and put up with daily handling.

Measure the insert, not the frame

Most A-boards take a panel that slots in behind a lip or a snap frame, so the visible image is smaller than the panel itself. Take the frame apart and measure the old insert if you have one, including its thickness, since a panel that is too thick will not slide in. Allow for the edge of the frame covering your artwork. Sizes are not as standard as they seem, so a board labelled A1 may differ by a few millimetres from another maker's.

Writing for people on foot

Someone walking past reads downward at an angle, and usually from one side, so a tall layout with lots of copy fails quickly. A good test is whether your message can be read in the time it takes to walk three steps. Try these ideas:

  • Lead with one offer or reason to come in
  • Put an arrow or the words "this way" if the door is hidden
  • Use different content on each face for each direction of travel

Boards take a beating, so choose materials to suit

Your sign goes in and out every day, gets rained on and may get knocked by buggies. Foamex is light and easy to change, but it can dent and scratch. Aluminium panels resist knocks and last longer, at a higher cost, while correx suits short promotions. Check too whether your council or landlord allows signs on the pavement, because rules vary, and leave enough clear room for wheelchair users and people with visual impairments.

Your questions.

Can pavement sign graphics be changed for seasonal offers?

Yes. Slot-in panels are designed to be swapped, so you could keep your permanent brand on one side and rotate offers on the other. Ask us about printing a set of panels together.

Is foamex suitable for a board left outside every day?

It copes with rain, but edges can chip and the surface can mark with regular handling. If your board lives outside daily, compare it with aluminium, which costs more but stands up better to knocks.
