Directional event signs

Nothing frustrates guests like arriving at a large venue with no clue which way to go. Directional event signs are simple pieces of print, but conference, wedding and trade show organisers get more from them with a little planning.

Why foamex suits short-run routes

Foamex boards are light, rigid and easy to fix to easels, walls or stands, so they are a common pick for indoor event routes. They can handle a short outdoor spell too, though thin boards may bow in sun and wind, and corners can get damaged if stacked carelessly. For a muddy field, correx on stakes might be more practical. Board thickness should suit the sign size, as a larger panel needs more stiffness to stay flat when propped on an easel.

A kit of parts beats one-off signs

Instead of printing a custom sign for each position, design a set. Left, right and straight-ahead arrows on the same template cover most needs, with a plain name line for each destination. Print a few spares of each arrow for route changes at the last minute. A printed board cannot simply be flipped to point the other way, so count arrows out against the floor plan. Number the boards on the reverse with their location, so a temporary crew can set up without a briefing.

Sight lines on the day

Directional event signs get hidden by queues, open doors and catering trolleys. Position boards above head height where you can, or at eye level on a clear wall, and look at them from the direction guests actually arrive. Arrows can confuse at stairs and lifts, so add words such as first floor. Check the venue's fixing rules, and make sure nothing obstructs a fire route. If your site needs something more lasting, our signage page covers other options.

Your questions.

What thickness of foamex do I need for event arrows?

That hangs on the sign size and how it will be supported. Thin board suits small wall signs, whereas larger panels on easels usually need something stiffer. Give us your sizes and we can recommend a thickness.

Can directional signs be used outdoors on the day?

Foamex can handle short outdoor use in reasonable weather, but wind is a risk for freestanding boards. Weigh down stands or use stakes, and ask about correx if the ground is soft or wet.
