Ordering prints for delivery abroad

Prints can leave London by post or by FedEx, and the right choice depends on weight, how quickly you need it and how the piece is packed. Size and customs matter as much as price.

Rolled, flat or stretched?

What you order decides how it can travel, so think about this before you pick the product.

How each type of print travels
What you are sendingHow it travelsThings to think about
Paper print or posterRolled in a tubeUsually the simplest way to send a print abroad
Fabric or PVCRolled or foldedCompact, though fold lines may need to relax
Mounted boardFlat, in protective packingSize and weight can push up the cost; corners are at risk
Stretched canvasBoxed, with corner protectionBulky for its weight, so ask us how to send it
Face-mounted acrylicCrated or heavily boxedAsk us before you order

Couriers often charge on the size of a parcel as well as on its actual weight, so a large, light box can cost more than you would expect. If a board is destined for an overseas show, it may make more sense to send a rolled print and have it mounted locally. Our guide to packing and delivering large prints has more on this.

Customs, in plain terms.

Anything leaving the UK, including to the EU, is an export and will usually need a customs declaration. These points are general, and the rules vary by country and can change, so check them for the destination.

  • Who pays import charges? The person receiving a parcel is often asked to pay duty and local tax before delivery. Warn them in advance.
  • What is the value? A declared value must be honest. Have a clear description, such as "printed poster on paper".
  • What about exhibitions? Goods that go abroad for a show and come back may need different paperwork. A freight agent or the show's official forwarder can help.

For VAT on an overseas order, ask us about your particular case, and take advice if you are unsure.

Timing.

Allow for production, transit and possible customs checks. Parcels can be held at a border, so keep a margin, especially before an opening. Tell us the date that it needs to arrive, not the date that you would like it to leave. Planning print deadlines shows how to count back from it.

Send us the full address

Include the recipient's name, a phone number for the courier, and any delivery notes. For galleries and venues, confirm that they can receive parcels on the day, and quote any exhibitor or stand reference.

Useful to know

Your questions.

Can you send a framed print abroad?

Ask us first. Glass and frames need careful packing, so it can be better to send the print rolled and frame it at the other end.

How do I know what my order weighs?

Tell us what you are ordering and where it is going, and we will work out the delivery price for you.

Do you deliver to Ireland and the Channel Islands?

Give us the address and we will confirm the right service. Customs rules can apply to some places close to the UK, too.
