Foamex, correx or aluminium: which sign board do you need?
Superchrome ·
Rigid signs look similar in a quote, but the board underneath decides how long a sign lasts and where it can go. Foamex, correx and aluminium composite are the three most common options.
Correx: light and temporary
Correx is a fluted plastic board, similar in structure to corrugated cardboard. It is light, inexpensive and copes with rain, which makes it a common choice for short term site signs, estate agent boards and event directions. The flutes can show on close inspection, so it suits messages read from a distance.
Foamex: smooth and versatile
Foamex is a rigid PVC foam board with a smooth, flat surface that suits photographs and fine detail. It is widely used for indoor signs, retail displays and exhibition panels, and can work outdoors in the shorter term. It can soften or bow in strong heat, so a very sunny position deserves a conversation first.
Aluminium composite: built to stay
Aluminium composite has a plastic core between two thin aluminium sheets. It is flat, stiff and suited to long term outdoor signs, such as shopfronts and building signage. It costs more and weighs more, but it is usually the right choice when the sign is meant to stay up.
How to choose
Start with three questions: is it indoors or outdoors, how long does it need to last, and how close will people get to it? See correx printing, foamex printing and aluminium signs for more.
