Acrylic sign printing

Acrylic sign printing gives a logo or message the depth and shine of a glazed panel. It is usually chosen for reception walls, door plaques, showroom signs and anywhere the sign is seen up close.

Print on the back for depth, on the front for texture

Printing the reverse of a clear sheet means the image is viewed through the acrylic, which gives a deep, glossy look and shields the ink from scratches. Artwork must be mirrored for this, so tell us which way round your file is. A white backing layer may be needed to stop colours looking thin against a dark wall. Printing on the face keeps the surface character of frosted or coloured sheet but leaves the ink exposed. Our acrylic printing page also covers photo and display uses.

Choosing a thickness that suits the wall

Thicker sheet looks more substantial, since the edge catches light and gives a sense of weight, but it is heavier and needs firmer fixings. A small door sign might work well in a thin sheet, whereas a wide reception panel usually needs something thicker to avoid looking flimsy. Drilled stand-offs float the panel off the wall and cast a slight shadow, which is part of the appeal. Plan their positions at the design stage, so that no hole lands on a logo. Plasterboard walls may need suitable fixings behind them.

Living with a gloss surface

Acrylic shows fingerprints and fine scratches more readily than glass, particularly on dark designs. Clean it with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, and avoid solvent cleaners, which can craze the surface. Bright spotlights may produce reflections, so look at where the lights fall before fixing the position. Outdoor use depends on the sheet and print method, so ask first; for exposed walls, aluminium signs may be more practical. If a sign must carry safety or accessibility information, check that requirement separately.

Useful to know

Your questions.

Is acrylic sign printing suitable for outdoor use?

It can be, depending on the sheet, inks and exposure. Direct sun and temperature swings put more demand on the panel and its fixings, so tell us the location and we'll advise before you commit.

Can an acrylic sign be cut to a logo shape?

Yes, acrylic can be shaped, with limits on very fine points and thin bridges, which are fragile. Supply a vector outline and we'll let you know if anything needs adjusting.
